Changes to tramps will be notified on the club website and the club secretary will email these if advised in time. The trip coordinator should also be advised of proposed changes or additions to the programme or if a tramp doesn’t happen because of bad weather, poor numbers etc. Tramp descriptions, maps and downloadable GPS data for most tramps, but not all, are located on the club website.


Start times for tramps are 7.30 am on Wednesday and 8.00 am on Thursday, unless noted otherwise under the particular tramp. The van will leave promptly at the appointed time. The letter in brackets, for example. (A), relates to the van recovery rate.


Fitness/Trip Grading                                                                                              

Easy: A tramp on fairly level formed tracks, duration 4+ hours, and where there is usually the  option of returning by the same track.                                            

Moderate: A tramp of 4 – 6 hours, often on less well formed tracks or on off-track routes, can involve river crossings or short sections of steep terrain.                     

Fit: Can be over 6 hours duration, tramping on either formed tracks or off track routes, river crossings, steep terrain, snow conditions or high altitudes.

Saturday August 21st is a tentative departure date. However we will delay departure till first ‘window of opportunity’ ie   3 out of 4 fine days.

DAY 1 ; Depart Taupo 8am, lunch at Whangamomona then travel approx. 1 hr 15mins to Kohi Saddle  on  Mangaehu Road ( East of Stratford) tramp 2hrs to Omaru Hut.

DAY 2;  3 ½ hr walk to Mt Humphries Junction. If weather clear, 1 ½ hr return walk to Mt Humphries Summit. 739meters.  1 ½ hr walk to Pouri Hut.

DAY 3 ; Pouri Hut to Puketotara Hut 7 ½ hrs.

DAY 4 ; Puketotara Hut to Whanganui River 1 hr. Meet pre-arranged Jet Boat to Pipiriki.

The  ‘Plan B’ part ……………  Bernie, our driver,  will tramp to Mt Humphries Summit and return to Omaru Hut for night 2. Day 3 he will return to van and on to Stratford or Whanganui for the night. Day 4, travel to Pipiriki to meet tramp group. All return to Taupo.

LOAD BIKES  Saturday 7.30am.   103 Gillies Ave. Vehicles can be left there for the wknd.

Depart for Taumarunui to accommodation at Motel.

DAY1  Sat 18

Ride circuit on Ongarue Back Rd , NORTH, to SH4, Opotiki Rd, Ararima East Rd, Otunui North Rd, Kururau Rd, and return to start.


Moderate +     Mix of sealed and metal roads.   Approx 60 kms.

Overnight at Motel, Probably dine out.

DAY 2  Sun 19

Pack up and out of motel. Move Club Van to Owhango. Drivers return to Taumarunui in Bernie’s van.

Ride SOUTH from motel, following ‘Mountains to Sea Bike Trail’. A lot of metal road and up-hill to Owhango.

LUNCH and battery charge for 1 ½ hrs.      

 Relocate Club Van to Raurimu….. ( Bernie has a  cunning plan ! )

Ride Owhango, SOUTH WEST, on Kawautahi Road, then , SOUTH EAST , on Kaiteke Road to Raurimu.

Moderate +     Mix of sealed and metal roads.    

Return to Taupo     ( A )   ( $10 )     plus trailer $15 pp




Friday 8th October to Tuesday 12th October



Day 1 –Depart Taupo Friday  8th Oct  7.30a.m.

Drive via Wairoa to Camp Kaitawa – 4 hours –

Can pick up last minute groceries in Wairoa

Lunch in Wairoa on River Bank Osler’s Pies worth a try

On to Camp Kaitawa and off load gear.

Drive up to Onepoto Caves and walk through them 2 hours return - need torch

Drive to Urewera Forest Park Head Quarters

Do Aniwaniwa Falls and Papakorito Falls Walks


Day 2 -Saturday– In the van 7.30a.m. Walk from Onepoto to Panekiri Hut and return 8.8km one way


Day 3 –Sunday – In the van 7.30a.m. Drive to Hopurahine and walk towards Marauiti Hut as far as we feel like and return


Day 4 – Monday – In the van 7.30a.m.  Walk to Waikareiti – vote on continuing to Sandy Bay Hut and return or doing the Lake Ruapani Circuit. 


Day 5 – Tuesday– Pack up, Clean Up, do a short walk perhaps Ngamoko Summit – 5 hours return - on the way home - driving via Murupara to complete the circuit. 


Other Short Walks -  Hinerau Walk, Aniwaniwa Falls Track, Papakorito Falls, Black Beech Walk, Hinau Walk, Tawa Walk, Lou’s Lookout, Whatapo Bay, Armed Constabulary Redoubt, Lake Kiriopukae.  

Ngamoko Track to Summit (2.5 hours to Summit one Way or 20 minutes to a big Rata Tree)

Do all or some of these options and probably do one or two on Day 1


Leave for Taupo after lunch.




Share of Mileage roughly 600kms x 70c = $420 divided by 12 = Roughly $35pp

Accommodation: Camp Kaitawa very similar accommodation to Konini Lodge – i.e. Electric cooking, hot showers, fridges, all pots, plates, cutlery etc provided.Cost $25.00 per night if there are 10 or more otherwise a minimum charge of $250.00 per night to be shared by the lessor number going. 

The minimum Charge of $250.00 per night for the group is due a fortnight before we go.

There are separate bunk rooms with four beds for those who don’t like the communal snoring.  First booked get the best options.

Van Recovery Rates:

 A Trips: Up to 280km round-trip – minimum rate is equivalent of seven persons @ $10/per person ($70), with same cost for Turangi and Taupo members no matter where pick-up might be.

 B Trips: Between 280 - 375km round-trip – minimum rate is equivalent of seven persons @ $15 ($105) with the same cost for Turangi and Taupo members no matter where pick-up might be.

 C Trips: Over 375km round-trip – no minimum number of passengers and at $0.70 per km. Trip leader calculates cost as total km X $0.70 and divides total cost by number of participants to get individual contributions.
